Gogh… and above all, not to miss, the weekly market on
Wednesday mornings, where all the flavours and scents are
suggested to you. Then organise your picnic with goat cheese
from the Alpilles, a bit of olive oil from the Baux, a
bottle of wine… TOURISM
The Antiques, Roman remnants : Jules’ Mausoleum, the Arc
of Triumph. Museum of the Alpilles
(Pierre de Brun Museum) : Located in the historic centre
of the village, the museum is set up in an old town house
from the Renaissance era, the Mistral de Montdragon hotel.
Saint-Martin Church : Located in the heart of the old
past of the city that she dominates by its imposing size,
the church is constituted by elements from different eras.
It is said that she already existed in 1122, then extended
and made more attractive in 1331 by order of the Pope of
Avignon Jean XXII in order to transform this little church
in a bigger one… The Saint-Paul de
Maussole monastery : Famous for having welcomed Vincent
Van Gogh from May 1889 to May 1890, this monastery is above
all one of the most beautiful religious monuments of
Provence. Its name is due to its proximity with the Julii
Mausoleum… The Saint-Jacques Hospital :
Built between the two high walls of the city, it was
called « Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle hospital » around
1646. On the chapel’s door, the shell is characteristic of
Saint-Jacques’s worship. The hospital will remain open until
1653. The Saint-Martin Collégiale :
Rebuilt after the collapse in the 19th century, it kept its
Gothic church tower from the 14th century. You will see two
sections from a retable dating from 1503, one representing
the Virgin and the child playing with a rosary, and the
other a bishop standing up. It has a very beautiful organ.
Planet area : You will admire there the most
beautiful architectural housing development which already
existed at the time of Nostradamus. This little place, which
is today called « Doctor Favier’s Square (1773-1862) »,
benefactor of the poor, stretches out in front of the
Mistral de Mondragon hotel and, before 1849, was called «
Herbed Square » because of the market that occurred there.
Nostradamus Fountain : His bust, which is the work of
the sculptor Ambroise Liotard, succeeded in 1859 to that of
Louis XVI on this very nice fountain of classical style.
Jean de Renaud Square : This family set up at Saint-Rémy
in the 16th century. Jean, an architect working for François
I, was killed at Saint-Quentin’s siege in 1557 and was
buried in Saint-Martin’s church. The
Gaussier mount : this summit of the Alpilles massif
overlooks the Glanum site and the present city of Saint-Rémy
de Provence. It was the Acropolis of saline oppidum that
existed several centuries before the creation of Glanum.
Jean de Saint-Rémy, Michel de Nostredame’s
great-grand-father, used to bring the child there to learn
him the knowledge concerning stars. The
Baux de Provence : follow the slight slopes surrounded
by olive trees, that leads you to the Baux de Provence.
The Baux village is a fortress set up right at the top of a
rocky peak, which offers an extraordinary panorama of all
the area. You will find numerous Neolithic remnants, from
the Roman era and the Middle Ages. The Baux Castel is an
exceptional site with its reconstitutions of war machines.
Do not miss the Cathedral of Pictures and its extraordinary
audiovisual show.
Everyday, we will recommend you an inevitable market in the
streets of the neighbouring village, the starting point for
one day-trip. The rice and salt’s road,
towards Arles and the Camargue : Arles, little Roma of
the Gaules, enlighted by Van Gogh, animated by the féria and
the celebrations for the Premices of Rice… The Regional
Natural Park of Camargue, its conservation area and also the
huge and unspoiled beaches around the Salins-de-Giraud…

manufactures are printed these richly brocaded materials
called « Indians », either by hand or by roll of brass, and
according to patterns and a savoir-faire perpetrated for 200
years. The Castels’ road in Lubéron :
stony and highly-perched villages such as Lacoste and
Bonnieux, from bories to Gordes, unusual country of castles

Morgiou, Port-Miou, En-Vau between a cobalt blue sky and an
emerald sea… to Cap Canaille via the Crêtes’ road, on water
kayaking in the shade of cliffs. Or submerged in a fantastic
world at several tens of metres deep, looking for fantastic
treasures and depths around the islands off the coast of
either Marseille or Hyères… The
cabinetmakers and antique dealers’ road towards Avignon :

of their style in the 17th and 18th centuries, right in the
heart of the Arles-Aix-Avignon triangle. Old furnitures or
copies, a route to follow at craftsmen’s or rummaging in the
